Guardians of the Galaxy: Cosmic Rewind is an inside dark ride with amazing electronic projections as well as inside loops. The cart turns a full 360 degrees as the characters go alongside the viewer.
This ride immerses the viewer in an amazing sci-fi world. As the viewer goes throughout the ride, there are characters and effects surrounding them. The characters follow the viewer along as they help them defeat another enemy. The viewers are able to follow the characters along seamlessly due to the 360 degree feature of the cart. So, when the character switches sides, the viewer is able to follow along as the cart moves from left to right while also enjoying the thrill of being on a rollercoaster.
They ended up calling this mechanism the "OmniCoaster". What they had before was just an attraction that could move side to side with not much movement on the tracks. But with this ride, they were able to keep the thrill of a rollercoaster with twists and turns while also being able to move the actual cart the viewers are on from left to right. They also created a contactless system that would push viewers backwards on the ride.
Although there is a lot of information on this ride and incredible new technology, the mechanics of it are still very new. The OmniMover, what OmniCoaster was created from, uses constant motion and multiple chains that allow for the 360 movement. My guess for the OmniCoaster is that the lane of carts that go each time have a system underneath that replicates the OmniMover in a way.
This coaster is made of gears, wheel bearings, and wheels to be able to turn the coaster in a 360 motion. There is a tracking system that follows the cart that allows it to be faced in the correct direction at the right time. This video above explains all the mechanics of this ride, including all the projections as the beginning. The mechanics of not only making sure there is enough room, but also making sure that they are able to rotate 360 degrees while the viewers still having fun is amazing.
The more and more I learned about this ride with its new coaster technologies and projection capabilities, the more amazed I am. From it's new technology on the coaster as well as projections, it brings a whole new game to what a coaster can be. I hope I will have a chance to ride this coaster someday.
